What the shit?
What the fuck did I just read? And why do I want more of it?
That’s old man jenkins

HOW MANY TIMES DO WE HAVE TO TEACH YOU THIS LESSON, OLD MAN?
hi reggie remember that time you decided that relationships in tomodachi life should be hetero only and declined to change it when you got blowback for it? just letting you know that “marriage is for straights only and this mii representation of you yourself the player can only be hetero, other options don’t exist” is a very political statement, reggie.
reggie makes all of the video games at nintendo by himself yeah
it’s him, it’s Reggie Nintendo
Oh my god, I hate having to tell people about the Tomodachi Life thing. No, the Japanese version of Tomodachi Life did not have gay relationships. It was one part Japanese players dressing their miis to look like the opposite gender then having those miis get in relationships to give the appearance of same sex relationships, then these got picked up by western sites who mistranslated these screencaps.
The other reason was because of a game breaking bug. In Japan there was a previous Tomodachi game on the original DS that we didn’t get. Players were able to transfer miis from the old game into the new game, as well as miis from the Wii, but there was a data glitch that fucked with the game’s data when these miis were imported that caused different shit to happen, one of these was placing new miis into preexisting relationships, some of these miis being same sex. The glitch was game breaking, though, and could absolutely ruin your save data.
This glitch had to be patched out, but western news sites mistranslated the whole ordeal, reporting that Nintendo removed same sex relationships from the game. This pissed off a lot of people, and Nintendo tried to clarify the whole thing, but it was too late. At that point, people wanted Nintendo to put this feature into the game, but Nintendo basically said that because it wasn’t in the game originally, and that the game was about to be released, that it would be unfeasible to add it in. They did say they would consider it for the next Tomodachi game, but people aren’t happy with that.
Tl;Dr: They didn’t take same sex relationships out out of malice but because it was the effect of a game breaking glitch. They didn’t include it after fan outcry because the game was about to be shipped out, and it would be way too much to change it at that point.
You’re telling me that Nintendo, a company that can update my smash game or mario cart game with new patches every single time I turn my DS couldn’t have fixed that shit?
It doesn’t matter. It’s still a really fucking asshole thing to do. Like “uh it was an accident, we can’t have same sex couples on accident and there’s absolutely no way to fix it”
Yeah okay, bullshit
Y'all will literally excuse anything that Nintendo has done ever because it’s Nintendo.
Smash and Mario Kart wouldn’t need massive sweeping changes to function the way you’d want them to
This is a silly gimmicky sims style game that’s a tiny niche thing. if you think they’re gonna change it just to appease a Mad Gendersoup Brigade on tumblr you’re delusional
Mad Gendersoup Brigade
Y I K E S
i honestly am shocked at how much this doesn’t make sense I honestly am just reblogging so everyone else can see “ Mad Gendersoup Brigade “
“he’s not wrong so I’ll just go Yikes™ and hope nobody notices”
awe honey :/ you are wrong though. Because Nintendo literally has the ability to fix their shit and they didn’t. :/ but, sure, continue living in ignorance and sucking Nintendo dick. Just pray the “ Mad Gendersoup Brigade “ doesn’t get yah
ability, sure.
desire, motivation, and financial incentive to “fix their shit” by adding something that almost nobody would use?
ehhhh no.
i really don’t understand why people are still mad at nintendo for not taking the expense to add something that was not actually intended for a game where it’s about 100% certain everyone that worked on it moved on to something else.
also nice casual homophobia there lmao
Honestly, I’m just glad you admitted that your point is homophobic, lmfao.
you know the tomodachi life thing was a glitch and would require a bunch of major programming changes, right? the bug in it that allowed you to do that also fucked up your save file which is why they couldn’t patch it in. adding it was not worth the financial effort.
every time i see tumblr complain that putting some major feature in a game would be easy, it’s clear they have no idea how game development works or how much time that shit takes
Maybe it shouldn’t need a bug to exist. Maybe the major feature of EXCLUSION (inclusion requires literally zero effort) shouldn’t have been put in.
Y'all are like, anti-logic.
“It requires zero effort to program a new function into a game”
How’s that for anti-logic
They likely didn’t include it in the first place because Japan is a super socially conservative nation and the programmers likely didn’t think to include it
Acting like Nintendo left it out because they’re politically opposed to gay relationships (which there is zero evidence for) is completely disingenuous
But… you’re the one who wanted a feature. NOT excluding something isn’t a feature. Programming exclusion takes effort. NOT doing that is no effort.
Did you even read what you misquoted?
Then you describe a thing as the most likely conclusion before stating that same conclusion is impossible.
You’re contradicting yourself.
Opposition to logic.
What
It takes effort to program and change something.
It’s not like they specifically barred Miis of the same sex from being in a relationship, they didn’t include the feature in the game. Adding it would take effort.
The relationship system is based off of Miis of the opposite gender interacting together, therefore it would require changing how the relationship system works to alter that. The bug couldn’t exist if they specifically barred Miis from being in same-sex relationships in the game.
I really don’t understand what you’re trying to argue here, but this isn’t something where they specifically made a conscious decision to not include gay relationships because they hate gay people. Like I said, Japan is super socially conservative and they likely just didn’t even consider that angle when making the game. Assuming malicious intent is jumping to conclusions that likely are not the case, especially since gay relationships have been featured in other Nintendo titles, like Fire Emblem.
It took effort to exclude gay people on the first place. They could have not done that.
Kinda like how it would have taken you far less effort to READ WHAT I WROTE in the first place.
“The relationship system is based off of Miis of the opposite gender interacting together, therefore it would require changing how the relationship system works to alter that.”
Buddy. They could have, I dunno, NOT done that?
‘It’s not that Nintendo hates gay people, they’re Japanese which means they hate gay people.’
Yeah, good logic. First of all, that’s still hating gay people. You contradicted yourself.
You just described malicious intent, btw. That’s what that means.
And all of this is FAR beside the original point, that acclaim to producing “apolitical” art is inherently bullshit.
How the hell is “not thinking of including something because the developers are from a culture where gay rights are not often discussed in the public sphere” malicious intent?
You’re looking at this from a purely western standpoint. Gay rights are a very big issue here. In Japan, they are rarely ever discussed in the public political sphere. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying there aren’t gay people in Japan, but the issues surrounding gay rights are not discussed as often so most don’t think about being inclusive. That is likely why the option was not included.
“It took effort to exclude gay people on the first place. They could have not done that.”
You’re acting like there was some conscious decision to not include gay people in the game, when there’s no evidence for that. Given the lack of discourse over gay rights in Japan, it’s perfectly reasonable that they simply didn’t think to include it.
Also, you are putting words in my mouth. I never said they hate gay people. I said the culture is very traditionalist and conservative, that is not the same thing as hating gay people.
Back onto the original point, it is definitely not bullshit to produce apolitical art. “All art is political” is frankly, a really dumb thing to say when it’s clearly not the case. Stuff like Bomberman, Pac-Man, and Mario are not political, they’re made purely for entertainment purposes, and any attempt to analyze them as the opposite requires a shitload of mental gymnastics. Nintendo isn’t a company that is in game development to make art. They’re in it to entertain people and make money. Fucking Wii Sports or some shit is certainly not political.
Dude, in a game where any character can have a romance, restricting those by gender is the thing put in. Inclusion is what happens when you don’t *intentionally* exclude. It’s the no-effort option.
Saying they did it because they’re Japanese has issues (are you aware there are gay Japanese people) and doesn’t even back up your claim because you’re still saying they did it.
Which is good, ‘cuz they did. Not much room to claim otherwise.
“You’re acting like there was some conscious decision to not include gay people in the game, when there’s no evidence for that.”
How the Hell you think they make games? Dice rolling? “They made the game without conscious decisions! Everything completely random and unintended!”
That’s pretty insulting. You’re bad at defending them.
“I said the culture is very traditionalist and conservative, that is not the same thing as hating gay people.”
You’re using those as synonyms for “homophobic,” so if one of us knows that’s not what they mean it must be me.
Mental gymnastics, OR… thinking about the stories involved.
Wii Sports was like a demo of how it works, buuut… it’s a game where players can play as themselves using the built-in character builder. Which is made of options that were designed and chosen.
And hey, it’s got default NPC opponents. Ooh, got some design decisions, there!
And you’re gonna claim MARIO is apolitical? I get that you don’t think highly of Mario, but that is absurd.
Also, you disproved his original claim yourself. In this very post. You’re really gonna defend it now?
The business exists because selling what they make turns a profit. That doesn’t mean they don’t make it in the first place.
The notion is ridiculous. It’s not just not true, a claim like that *can’t* be true. It’s absurd.
You realize something can be excluded by simply forgetting to put it in, right? In a society like Japan, most people assume straight is the default. This is the case in a lot of places, but especially so in somewhere like Japan which is very socially conservative. Not to mention the relationship system is largely based around the Miis having kids, which is something not possible for a gay couple without using other means, so even if it was thought of in development, including it could have been seen as pointless.
I also specifically stated there are gay Japanese people earlier in the post.
Like, there aren’t a lot of black people in anime because there aren’t very many black people in Japan itself. It’s not that they specifically went out of their way to not include black people, they didn’t include any because the live in a largely
Mario is apolitical. I fucking love Mario, and I like how you’re trying to assume I don’t for no reason There’s really no political message to it other than “kidnapping people is bad”, which is pretty much universal. Political discussions can stem from the fictional world in the game, but that does not make the work inherently political.
Some games are political. Some games aren’t. Randomly generated opponents in Wii Sports are not a political message. It’s fucking sports. Tetris is falling blocks. There’s no message there.
Wonder Woman is the only DC Extended Universe movie with a higher Rotten Tomatoes score than Sky High
I love how if you die in the second phase of the tinker fight in SoT it cuts straight to it
Stupid shipping thoughts
The funny thing is while I ship nesscas (it is probably one of my few yoai/yuri ships that are my otp) I don’t exactly care for Clausten, I don’t hate it, if you like it fine, it’s just not my cup of tea. But my idea of a ship for claus is Claula (clausxpaula) it was the fanfic “Pk lovin” that got me into it and I have been shipping it ever since. But once again it’s just my stupid thoughts and you don’t have to agree with them.
gently inhales…………
I can’t believe you reblogged this, thanks!
